..reading Orwell's 1984, where the government alters the past to prevent the lower classes of the population from gaining such knowledge and a pretty theoretic question popped into my head...

...is the past truly changeable ?

For me, it is and it's not. The past is what happened, and you can't what actually happened, but on the other hand, the past is a general perception of what may or may not have occurred. What I mean is that the past may truly be only opinionated because you never hear of glorious slaughters by the Nazis or prosperous times during the reigns of tyrants and dictators, and that's because history has been written by those who have won battles, hung heroes and have eliminated all opposition.

What do you think ? ;p

"The past is what happened" correct
"the past is a general perception of what may or may not have occurred" i believe this is history. History is different for all of us given what we know, choose to believe, etc. What has past, however, cannot be changed.

But almost everyone knows that Hitler was very successful in almost everything he did. Running the country, building German confidence and self-esteem, killing the Jews. As for history being written by the winners, it's just not true. We have accounts from losing sides all throughout history. Germans have an account of what happened during 1925-1945 in Germany and it is very different than what you learn in America. I know, i've learned both. However both American and German history, while telling different stories, have the same point. If you want stories about the glorious slaughters of the Nazis, check out a KKK or neoNazi website. History is not about a country or certain people, but about humanity. There are tons of useless facts and information out there; history, however, is built on top of ideas that lasted! Ideas like, you shouldn't kill people (that one was one of the first lessons history taught us, think Cain and Able). That's why Hitler will go down in infamy. That's why you can look through all the history of China and India and find similar themes as American history.

The misinterpretation or loss of accurate history is not a problem insofar as history will repeat. We will learn these lessons regardless of what happens (unless the human race destroys itself). That is not to say that if we forget about the holocaust a man named Adolf Hitler will become the supreme leader of the country of German and kill a bunch more Jews, but that if we forget that allowing one man access to too much power over a people prone to prejudice, we can expect similar results. That being said, the past cannot be changed because it is obviously outside of our power to do so.

If you read all that, thank you for being patient.
